I Can't Have a Garden. So I Grew One on My Counter.

Living in a rented apartment means a lot of "no's."

No painting the walls. No knocking down that awkward half-wall in the kitchen. And definitely no garden.

For the longest time I just accepted it. I bought my herbs from the grocery store like everyone else. That sad little plastic clamshell of basil that costs $4, lasts three days, and ends up as a soggy mess in the back of my fridge.

Then I started thinking about what I actually wanted. Fresh food. Clean eating. A home that felt alive and intentional. Not a lot to ask, right?

The problem was every solution I found required either outdoor space, a ton of maintenance, or both. Soil pots on a windowsill sound romantic until you're dealing with gnats, overwatered roots, and a plant that died anyway because your apartment faces north.

So I started researching hydroponic gardens. No soil, self-watering, built-in grow light. I kept seeing the Sproutly GrowPod come up and eventually just pulled the trigger.

I plugged it in, dropped in the pods, and genuinely forgot about it for a few days.

When I came back the sprouts were already pushing through.

Three weeks later I had more fresh basil, mint, and parsley than I knew what to do with. All on my kitchen counter. In my rented apartment. With zero outdoor space.

Here's what I didn't expect. It made my apartment feel like a home. Not a temporary place I'm waiting to leave. A real, living space that I actually curated.

If you're a renter who's given up on the idea of growing your own food, you haven't run out of options. You just haven't found the right one yet.
